Hi!

We'd like to use OpenVPN to secure the connection to mobile devices.
Since the cost for mobile internet connections is proportional to the
amount of transferred data, we want to minimize the traffic caused by
OpenVPN itself.

Using the following client configuration, the device receives arount
22KB per minute when the connection is idle, which amounts to about
1GB per month.

Code:
cd /etc/openvpn
client
dev tap
proto udp
remote <...>
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
pull
auth-user-pass
pkcs12 gateway.p12
comp-lzo yes

Is there any simple means to reduce the traffic to a more sensible
value?

TIA,

Albert Brandl

Hello

If possible, use tun instead of tap, this will remove the Ethernet frame. Avoid "ping", "ping-restart" and "keepalive" if it's in the server.conf. Set "reneg" to a higher value if the connection is established for quite a long time and the traffic is low.
